The FirmTech Ring Guide

Erection rings, explained plainly

Erection rings are soft bands worn at the base of the penis that slow blood from flowing back out, so an erection stays firmer for longer.

This guide from FirmTech covers how erection rings work, how to size and wear one safely, and how to choose between FirmTech's three doctor-designed rings: the TechRing at $275, which also measures your erections, and the Performance Ring and MaxPR at $60 each. None needs pills or a prescription.

Which erection ring should I choose?

For most men starting out, the FirmTech Performance Ring is the simplest choice: $60, adjustable, comfortable for up to 12 hours, and nothing to charge. Choose the TechRing if you want data on every session and every night, and the MaxPR if you want the tightest fit for sessions of up to 90 minutes.

A different product genuinely fits if you already use a vacuum erection device that comes with its own tension rings; follow that system's instructions. And if your erect girth is over 5.5 inches, FirmTech rings are outside their listed fit range.

How do erection rings work?

An erection depends on blood flowing into the penis and staying there. An erection ring adds gentle, even pressure at the base, which slows blood from flowing back out. The result is an erection that stays firmer for longer, for as long as the ring is worn. The effect is mechanical, so it works from the first use and ends when the ring comes off.

FirmTech's rings are designed with leading urologists and use an anatomical peno-scrotal fit: one loop sits around the base of the penis and the other behind the testicles, which spreads the pressure evenly. A hook-and-loop strap sets the tension, and the rings are made of soft, medical-grade elastomer that is phthalate-free and latex-free. FirmTech says the rings keep blood in without blocking ejaculation. Read how c rings and constriction rings compare.

What about erection tension rings?

Erection tension rings are constriction bands usually placed at the base after a vacuum pump has created an erection. Many people search for them by product name, such as Timm Medical Osbon ErecAid erection tension rings. They work on the same principle as an erection ring: trap the blood that is already there.

The difference is in how they are used. A vacuum-system tension ring is one part of a pump routine, while a FirmTech ring is worn on its own, put on soft, and adjusted with a strap. FirmTech also sells the TechRing with the VaxAid Deluxe water-based pump as a $499 bundle for men who want both. Read the full erection tension rings comparison.

How do you put on an erection ring?

  1. Open the loop. Hold it open and drop the testicles through.
  2. Set both loops. One loop sits under the testicles and the other around the base of the penis.
  3. Fine-tune the fit. Adjust the strap until it is snug but not tight.

It takes a few seconds and works best done before an erection. See the full step-by-step guide.

Common questions

What is an erection ring?

An erection ring is a soft band worn at the base of the penis that slows blood from flowing back out, so an erection stays firmer for longer. FirmTech's rings are doctor designed, made of medical-grade elastomer, and loop around both the base of the penis and behind the testicles for an anatomical peno-scrotal fit.

Do erection rings actually work?

Erection rings work mechanically: gentle, even pressure at the base helps hold blood in place while the ring is worn. FirmTech says its rings work from the first time you wear one, with no pills and no waiting. The effect lasts only as long as the ring stays on, so a ring supports an erection rather than creating one.

Which FirmTech ring should I buy?

Choose the TechRing ($275) if you want performance support plus data on every session and every night. Choose the Performance Ring ($60) for simple, comfortable support with nothing to charge. Choose the MaxPR ($60) if you want the tightest fit and most intensity and only need it for up to 90 minutes at a time.

Is there an ED ring size chart for FirmTech rings?

FirmTech rings come in one size, so there is no multi-size chart to pick from. One size fits 95% of men, up to 5.5 inches (14 cm) of erect girth, and the hook-and-loop strap adjusts to your exact size. If your erect girth is above 5.5 inches, the rings are outside their listed fit range.

What are the side effects of erection rings?

With constriction rings in general, most problems come from wearing one too tight or too long: discomfort, numbness, coldness or bruising. FirmTech's limits are 12 hours for the TechRing and Performance Ring and 90 minutes for the MaxPR. Remove a ring at once if it hurts, and see a doctor about any symptom that persists.

What are erection tension rings?

Erection tension rings are constriction bands, often sold for use with a vacuum erection device, placed at the base after an erection to keep blood from draining. Mayo Clinic describes the principle: a ring slipped on after pumping traps the blood and keeps the erection firm for up to 30 minutes, as cited in RxSleeve's 2026 ED ring comparison guide.

Do I need a prescription for an erection ring?

No. FirmTech rings work without pills or a prescription. The only medical step is optional: paying with HSA or FSA funds through Flex involves a short telehealth questionnaire that produces a Letter of Medical Necessity for your plan, at no extra cost.
